South Georgia - Bay of Isles

Because of the impending storm blowing across the South Atlantic, the captain decided that we should shelter for the day in the Bay of Isles before heading across to Tristan da Cunha.

There was a gale blowing when we got up and snow had piled up on the deck. There was an announcement that passengers were not allowed to go out on the decks until further notice.

The wind was gusting to over 100 kph. Unfortunately, whenever I looked to take a photo of the wind speed, it was never higher than 75 kph!

We were reasonably sheltered from the worst of the heavy seas, but you could see the force of the wind on the surf breaking on the beaches. As the waves broke, the wind carried the spray in great clouds across the beaches. It was pretty dramatic. Sadly, the photos I took from our cabin windows don't show this very clearly.

We watched the fur seals playing in the surf around the ship. They seemed totally unconcerned by the storm raging around us.

After breakfast, we attended Luke's lecture on the South Georgia fisheries, which was very interesting. Following the lecture, we headed for the dining-room and lunch. We joined Luqui, the glaciologist, Sally, Beverly and Ron.

After lunch, we went to the lecture on Shackleton (Part1) by Peter Damisch. Everyone thought it was an excellent presentation, both informative and entertaining.

At teatime, we went to the lounge for the trivia quiz on the subject of ice, presented by Luqui. Then it was Kara's lecture on whales, which was full of facts but not much else!

The captain announced we could go out on deck until dark, so we dressed warmly and ventured outside. It was very wet and windy, so we stood under cover on the aft deck.

Later, we went to the briefing and Stefan said that, if the storm died down, we would leave the Bay of Isles in the morning. He also added that there would be a cabaret show with Milly Johnson, who had joined the ship at Grytviken. It was to be her last ever performance. So, we went to the Panorama Lounge early to ensure we got good seats. Alfredo was already playing the piano and we wondered if Milly was going to be Stefan dressed up as a woman.

The show started when a glamorous 'woman' came into the lounge and mimed to a Shirley Bassey song. We couldn't work out who it was and it wasn't until Martin and Tama told us it was Fred, the restaurant manager, that we could recognise him!

He sang several songs and changed outfits, ending up removing his make-up, wig and dress to reveal himself! It was a great evening's entertainment.

We ended the evening by dancing to Alfredo's music and, as the ship rolled in the winds, we made our way to bed, wondering if we would be leaving the Bay of Isles in the morning.
