Day 3 at sea from South Georgia to Tristan da Cunha

We had a disturbed night, which was due to the ship rolling about in the swell but, by morning, the sea had settled down and the sun was shining.

Sunshine!!

We went to the dining-room for breakfast where we joined Kris and Susan. We then went back to our cabin and called Daniel to see what news there was from the hospital. Daniel was there with Keely, so we were able to talk to her as well. She told us she had been given an epidural and now it was just a matter of waiting.

We both felt pretty relieved that everything was going OK. With the sun shining, we went up on deck and took one of our round-the-ship walks and completed 10 circuits, with eight being about a mile. The sea was incredibly blue as this photo shows.

The South Atlantic

We then had lunch on the aft deck with Kathy, Larry and Cliff.

After lunch, we went to Hans Peter's botany lecture, which was followed by Kara's lecture comparing the animals of the Arctic and the Antarctic.

Stefan then gave a briefing on Tristan da Cunha and the plans for visiting the island with the various activities available. We decided that the walk to the site of the 1960's eruption was the best option to take. We are still over 600 nautical miles from Tristan, which is two days sailing.

Sadly, we still haven't sighted any whales. This has been one of the few disappointments of the trip but, with over two thousand miles of sailing to go, there is a good chance we will see some before we get to Cape Town.

When we returned to the cabin, I checked the satellite phone and there was a message to call Daniel. With nervous anticipation, we made the call and were greeted with the wonderful news that Isla-May Cirullo Franey had been born at 8pm UK time.

We were able to go to dinner and celebrate the new member of our family. We drank copious amounts of champagne with the others on our table, Beverly, Ron and Uli. Following the meal, we went up to the bar and had more celebratory drinks with Jean, Philip, Cliff, Dick and Chris.

We went to bed tired, but elated and then received our first photo of Isla-May. What a day!!
