Day 4 at sea from South Georgia to Tristan da Cunha

When we woke up in the morning, the first thing we did was check our emails to see what further news there was from home. Daniel had sent more photos of our beautiful seventh grandchild - a great way to start our fourth day at sea since we left South Georgia.

We went along to the dining-room and had breakfast with Rob and Gayle. Then we headed straight to Peter Damisch's lecture on Tristan da Cunha. He gave another excellent presentation with plenty of good illustrations, including the Tristan postage stamps which depict many aspects of Tristan history and life.

The lecture increased our desire to see Tristan da Cunha and we are all keeping our fingers crossed that we can land there, especially as the wind has risen once again and the ship's speed has slowed down because of it.

We are now on the same time zone as the UK. It is strange to think that, even though we are over 7,000 miles from home, it is the same time as in London!

Lunch was with Craig from New Zealand, Daniil, Susan and Kris - another very enjoyable meal.

We then went to the lecture by Will on the birds of Tristan da Cunha. While we were at the lecture, the sea was getting considerably rougher and everyone was talking about the landing on Tristan becoming increasingly problematic. Are we going to be disappointed after travelling so far?

Stefan announced that we will go first to Nightingale Island and attempt a Zodiac cruise there, then go to the main island on Sunday morning.

Then, as the seas became rougher, the ship's cruising speed was reduced from about 14 knots down to 7/8 knots, meaning that we will now go directly to Tristan, rather than via Nightingale Island, still hoping to arrive on Sunday morning.

Wendy went to Stefan's volcanology lecture which I listened to in the cabin. With the sea getter rougher and rougher, we declined an invitation to eat with Rob and Gayle. Wendy watched the end of "Life of Pi" and then, at about 8pm, we went for dinner. In case we were affected by the rolling of the ship, we sat on our own just having a main course and dessert.

The captain announced that because of the heavy seas, no-one was allowed out on the decks.

Following dinner, we went up to the Panorama Lounge for 'Liars' Club' (like 'Call My Bluff'). It was very, very amusing with Luke, Peter, Uli and Will on the panel. Our team consisted of Lesley (Peter's wife), Joyce from next door, Andy and us. With the ship rolling from side to side, there was a very funny moment when the panel members' chairs started sliding from side to side on the dance floor. It was a very enjoyable evening but, as we headed for bed, we wondered if we would ever get to Tristan da Cunha!!

NB Posting the photos here in London, I realise now that neither of us took any photos or video on March 15th. I think that must be the first time a day has gone by without photos on any of our adventure cruises!

Distance Travelled: 370 NM; total travelled since Ushuaia: 2,551NM
